Rights Talks

I’ve had a busy week this week. I gave a talk at Netflix where we discussed the racial and geneder disparities that exist in healthcare. I updated their management team on current womens health concerns, access to care and the recent legislative changes we’ve all been struggling with. I participated in a podcast (here) with the Canadian institute of workplace harrassment and violence discussing workplace harrassment in health care and my own personal struggles with it. Last but not least I participated a webcast (here) on the Healthcare Implications of Gender Bias in the US Medical Education System, which are quite significant and ongoing. Take a look!

But why physician models?

I’ll be walking the runway at New York Fashion Week to help promote mental health care and Patient Care Heroes. Wish me luck! Some more info:

Break Free NYFW is an immersive designer showcase featuring fashion and social issues. The designer showcase will be held during New York Fashion Week on Saturday, September 10th, 2022 at 7pm ET.

  • 6 pm: Doors open to the venue, and mocktail hour begins
  • 7 pm: The fashion show begins

Break Free NYFW is a runway show with a cause, leading the discussion on mental health and substance use disorders within the fashion industry. We have invited mental health and addiction rights activists to not only walk in this show as models but to be featured designers showcasing their collections for the New York elite to immerse themselves within their brands’ core mission of shining a light on this pressing issue.

Leading up to Break Free NYFW, there will be a series of virtual panels for the designers and models to take part in discussing topics ranging from substance use disorders within the fashion industry to personal testimonials of each participant’s connection to the cause.

The Break Free NYFW Designer Showcase will be held on Saturday, September 10th, which is World Suicide Prevention Day, a day to raise awareness on suicidal behaviors and how to effectively prevent them. September is also National Recovery Month, a month to celebrate those who have sought recovery from a substance use disorder and to encourage others to seek ways to gain sobriety and live a sober lifestyle, as well as National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month.

A portion of the proceeds from this show will go towards the Break Free Foundation, which serves as the scholarship oversight committee whose purpose is to provide scholarships to assist those seeking treatment for a substance use disorder through attending a rehabilitation center.

Maternal Motrality and Infection

One of the phrases I tell myself came directly from a Maternal Fetal Medicine (MFM) attending, and anyone who trained at MSU has heard this. “It’s better to have a living patient without a uterus than to bury them with it.” I remember my intern year and the first time I heard this phrase. It seemed so obvious to me. Of course, I would do a hysterectomy to save someone’s life. Read my newest article over at Medika Life

Aftershocks Webinar

In the wake of the SCOTUS decision regarding Roe v Wade, there is tremendous concern about reproductive health rights. What might not be so evident is the potential impact on wider-ranging rights, the overall health of women, privacy, and even business and investment.  Join us and a panel of experts as they discuss the unpredicted consequences of this momentous decision.

This webinar highlighted four areas of such consequences and the implications for:

Individual Rights     |     Health     |     Privacy     |     Benefits, Business, and Investment

Panelists addressed the key issues in each of these four areas as well as provide resources and ways you can take action.

Boston Globe II

Another interview for the Boston Globe. I just wish there were more I could do to fix this!

“We’re just going to see a mass exodus of physicians who are amazing and qualified, leaving states where they cannot practice evidence-based medicine,” Stecher said. “We will have a vacuum of care in those areas.”
